Visiting Minister: Attorney General Chris Finlayson, lecturer Valmaine Toki, and Law school Dean Professor Brad Morse.
Attorney General Chris Finlayson spoke to University of Waikato law students and members of the public today about the challenges facing Treaty of Waitangi settlement processes.
The associate minister of M?ori affairs and minister of Treaty of Waitangi negotiations talked about the settlement successes of 2012, and the challenges ahead.
?The government is committed to?reaching just, durable and final settlements. It?s necessary to address past wrongs and restore and invigorate the crown/M?ori relationship.?
He spoke of the 53 deeds of settlements achieved so far, and 35 milestones in the settlement process for 2012.
The challenges
The challenges facing the government?s goal completion date of 2014 were iwi readiness, overlapping interests, ensuring the relationships with iwi after settlements, and managing the intersect between contemporary and historic Treaty issues, said Mr Finlayson.
?The big issue for me is to make sure the past settlement relationships are such that the crown doesn?t fall back to its old ways, to make sure post-settlement relationships are in a position to achieve what we set out to achieve.?
The guest lecture was part of a paper being run by Te Piringa - Faculty of Law lecturer Valmaine Toki, focusing on the role of the Treaty in contemporary New Zealand.
