Euphoric Palestinians erupted in cheers, honked car horns and chanted "God is great" after the United Nations endorsed an independent state of Palestine, giving sweeping international backing to their demands for sovereignty over lands Israel occupied in 1967. JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel on Friday approved the construction of 3,000 homes in Jewish settlements on Israeli-occupied lands, a government official said, drawing swift condemnation from the Palestinians a day after their successful U.N. recognition bid.

The Palestinians reiterated their refusal to resume negotiations with Israel while building continues. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently poised for re-election to another four-year term and insisting that any negotiations begin without preconditions, prospects for an Israeli-Palestinian partition deal appear to be going into deep freeze.

The United Nations voted overwhelmingly to accept a Palestinian state in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem as a non-member observer state on Thursday, setting off jubilant celebrations among Palestinians.

Israel fiercely objected to the U.N. upgrade, saying Palestinian statehood could only come from direct negotiations and unilateral moves would harm that prospect. The Palestinians said the U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war was an attempt to salvage a possible peace deal.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has refused to negotiate with Israel while settlement construction continues, saying Israel's settlement expansion on war-won land was making a partition deal increasingly difficult.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat condemned Israel's announcement, saying it was "defying the whole international community and insisting on destroying the two-state solution." He said the Palestinian leadership is studying its options.

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh also insisted earlier Friday the Palestinian position hadn't changed, saying settlement building "is not just illegal, it's against the resolution."

More than 500,000 Israelis have moved to the West Bank and east Jerusalem since 1967. Israel unilaterally withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza in 2005, but continues to partially control access. The Islamic militant group Hamas seized control of the territory from Abbas' control in 2007 and recently gained popularity after holding its own following an eight-day Israeli military offensive aimed at stopping rocket fire.

The Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the sensitive issue publicly, said Israel decided to build 3,000 apartments for Jews in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. He said the government also decided to begin preparations for construction in other areas of the West Bank, including the so-called E-1 corridor that connects Jerusalem with the settlement bloc of Maaleh Adumim.

Construction there would pose a major obstacle for Palestinian statehood by cutting off east Jerusalem from the West Bank. Successive U.S. administrations have pressured Israel not to build in E-1 where a development plan calls for at least 3,500 homes.

Danny Seidemann, a lawyer for Ir Amim, an Israeli group that supports coexistence in Jerusalem, said construction did not appear imminent and the Israeli announcement contained "quite a lot of drama."

"There's an element of sticking it to the Palestinians," he said, adding that plans in E-1 were not only a slap to the Palestinians but to the Americans who oppose them too. "E-1 is the Judgment Day weapon," he said of the strategic impact of construction in that area.

Yesh Din, an Israeli rights group, called the Israeli decision "collective punishment" and called on Israel to retract its move.

"Israel should have understood by now that such behavior ... will no longer be tolerated by the international community," the group's executive director, Haim Erlich said.

Earlier this month, Israel said it was pushing forward construction of 1,200 new homes in Jewish settlements, in an apparent warning to the Palestinians to rethink their U.N. plan. Israel fears the Palestinians will use their upgraded status to confront Israel in international bodies and pressure it to make concessions.

Former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the one-time chief negotiator with the Palestinians, also slammed the decision.

"The decision at the U.N. on a Palestinian state is bad for Israel and so is Netanyahu's response," said Livni, who this week formed a new party to compete in Jan. 22 parliamentary elections. "The decision to build thousands of housing units as punishment to the Palestinians only punishes Israel ... the unnecessary statement only isolates Israel further."

In the U.N., only nine states opposed the Palestinian bid, including Israel and the United States, while 138 supported it.

The vote granted Abbas an overwhelming international endorsement for his key position: establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem. Netanyahu opposes a full pullback to the 1967 lines.

The Palestinians turned to the U.N. after two decades of on-again, off-again talks.

Netanyahu dismissed the U.N. vote as meaningless and accused Abbas of delivering a "defamatory and venomous" U.N. speech "full of mendacious propaganda" against Israel.

Supreme Johnson tipped to be dominant in Hammonds Getsetgo Trophy

Supreme Johnson will be the one to beat in the Hammonds Getsetgo Trophy at Hall Green in England on Thursday, November 29, 2012. He has been in terrific form over the past few months and it will be an extremely difficult task for his opponents to prevent him from taking the top spot.

The Grade OR contest is scheduled to kick off at 20:35 GMT and it has attracted some pretty decent runners. They will all be looking forward to a strong run in order to claim a cash prize of ?200 at the end of the day.

Both the speed and stamina will be crucial, as the overall distance to cover will be 480 metres. This means that the starting positions will also be important, as it will be crucial to gain some momentum at the start.

Due to this, Supreme Johnson will be a touch worried, as he has been slotted in trap number five. There is a chance that he gets blocked by some of the slower greyhounds, which could prove to be a little costly at the end of the day.

However, the race is not a short one and there will be quite a lot of time to make up towards the end. Moreover, his rivals are not in very good form at the moment, which will give him a chance of dominating the proceedings.

This is why the S. Buckland?s trained hound has been given the highest odds for victory and will enter the contest with a starting price of 11 to 10. The punters will be hesitant to risk many bets against him today, as there is a chance for them to win some easy money at the end of the day.

Ninja Jamie?s son out of Supreme Hestia was rated as the favourite to succeed in his most recent outing, but he failed to meet the expectations of his team. He suffered because of a bad start and fell short by just a short head distance in the end.

He will be looking to make an improvement this time around in order to make his team proud and his fans will be backing him up to do so.

Rolling HyTAQ robot avoids obstacles by taking to the air

The cylindrical cage of the HyTAQ (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor) gives the robot both aerial and rolling terrestrial locomotion capabilities (Photo:

Image Gallery (4 images)

A team at the Robotics Lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has come up with another take on the caged flying robots like the spherical air vehicle developed by Japan?s Ministry of Defense (JMD) and the more recent Kyosho Space Ball. However, instead of a spherical shape, the the outer protective cage of the HyTAQ (Hybrid Terrestrial and Aerial Quadrotor) is cylindrical and is attached to the quadrotor via a shaft connected by two rotating joints, thereby providing the HyTAQ with the ability to fly or roll over the ground.

With the quadrotors providing thrust for both aerial and terrestrial locomotion, there's no requirement for additional actuators that would increase the weight of the system. When on the ground, the rolling cage means the robot only needs to overcome rolling resistance to move forward, and when it encounters an obstacle to difficult to roll over, it can simply take to the air to jump over it.

The developers say the robot?s hybrid nature makes it much more energy efficient than aerial-only systems, with the ability to operate almost six times as long and travel a distance four times greater than such systems. Experiments conducted by the team showed that for aerial-only travel, its battery lasted five minutes and it traveled 1,969 ft (600 m), but rolling over a smooth surface saw its endurance extend to 27 minutes and the distance traveled increase to 7,874 ft (2,400 m).

The cage itself is constructed out of polycarbonate and carbon fiber making it both flexible and strong enough to withstand crashing. The development team has tested the HyTAQ?s ground performance over various types of terrain, including flat indoor surfaces and sand and grass outdoors. The ground locomotion capabilities also allow the robot to move when it?s too windy for flight.

Like its spherical kin, the reconnaissance and search and rescue potential of the camera-equipped robot are obvious and the team is now in the process of patenting the design and hopes to attract commercial interest.

The HyTAQ robot can be seen in action in the following video.

India's Top Roadside Eateries | BootsnAll Travel Articles

Traveling and eating are two of my biggest passions, and India offers a great glimpse into both. ?I prefer the dhaba (street) food over that which is served in a luxurious five star hotel. Often I have heard people complaining of the hygiene associated with these places.? While it may be true in some cases, there are many that are not only clean, but they also offer some of the freshest and most lip smacking dishes. The best part is that each region has its own speciality. From someone who has traveled through the length and breadth of the country, here are my personal top 10 roadside eateries of India.

Where to eat in North India?

1. Kesar Da Dhaba, Chowk Passian, Amritsar, Punjab

Located in the city of Amritstar, Kesar da Dhaba, the dhaba with crumbling paint and walls darkened by smoke, was started in 1916 by Late Lala Kesar Mal when he migrated from Shekhupura in Pakistan to set up shop here. Currently the fourth generation is running the business.

Despite being in operation for so many years, nothing about the place has changed. As Mr. Vijay Kumar, better known as Babbi Pehalwan, who runs the show now says, ?It?s not that we can?t afford to change things, but we don?t want to?. So they continue to serve food on 20 clean tables with around 25 waiters (who know very little English) flitting in and out trying to meet the demands of a continuous jostling crowd sitting on wooden stools, thrice a day. The originality of the taste is commendable.

This ?vegetarian restaurant with 100% ghee (clarified butter)? is located in the old city area called Chowk Passian. Cars can?t reach the eatery. Instead one has to take a rickshaw from the Golden Temple (Rs.20-25 one way). Have a look at the houses which dot this lane ? some are over a century old.

When it began operation, it used to serve only parantha and mah ki dal (urrad daal or black lentil). ?The latter used to be served free with the paranthas. Now 23 items are served, of which baingan (brinjal) bharta (with its smooth seedy and smoky paste), daal tadka, shahi paneer, lacha parantha (flaky and crunchy) and desserts like phirni (a cold sweet dish made of ground rice), gulam jamun (a deep fried ball of cottage cheese soaked in sugar syrup) and rasmalai (a milky dessert served with chopped nuts) are the most popular.

This eatery is a complete value for money with a plate of baingan bharta costing only Rs.60 ($1USD). Palak paneer costs Rs.90, and dal fry is priced very nominally at Rs.30. On the other hand, if you order yourself a thali (plate system), you will be served two paranthas, mah ki dal, cholle and raita (a yogurt based dip) for only Rs.43 ($0.80USD).

He plans to open a new outlet in the civil area, but that?s still some time away. Till then, for whoever is visiting Amritsar, he should definitely visit this roadside eatery at least once.

2. No.1 Ahuja Dhaba, G.T. Road, Murthal, Haryana

No.1 Ahuja Dhaba is located in Murthal, a village on NH1 highway on the way to Punjab and 50 km from the Delhi?s northern border. Murthal, in fact is known for its rows of innumerable brightly colored dhabas and the smell of butter on paranthas.

When you get close to this dhaba, you will find Mercedes and Audis parked side by side with trucks on the either side of the road. Parking, in fact, can be a tussle, especially during evening or during festival times. No matter how much the rush, you will always be warmly welcomed by the dhaba owner and a waiter called chotu. No wonder it has been popular ever since its inception in 1948.

The ambience of the place is worth mention. Fields surround the dhaba, and the food is served while you sit on manjis (cots) and Punjabi music plays in the background.

This vegetarian dhaba is known for its stuffed paranthas and tadka dal (lentils cooked in lots of ghee) with achar and raita. The tandoor roasted paranthas are surprisingly light except for the dollops of white butter on the top. You will also get Chinese dishes, among which the soups and the spring rolls are good. If you are stopping by early in the morning, then don?t miss the sweet and milky masala tea. Don?t worry about burning a hole in your pocket as the dishes are very nominally priced. A meal for two will not cost more than Rs. 180-250 ($3.25 ? $4.50USD).

It is quite a hygienic eatery as well. For example, the vegetarian dishes are prepared using fresh produce and green vegetables directly brought from the nearby fields and cooked in pure homemade ghee.

3. Lassiwala, MI Road, Jaipur, Rajasthan

If you are in Jaipur then do not miss a trip to Lassiwala on MI Road (just off the Panch Batti Mod). There are three of them now. The original one; however, is the one that says that it has been there since 1944. Its shop number is 312 and is located on the extreme left. Also, this is the one that sells no chaat (a dish made of fruits or vegetables with a lot of different spices) unlike the other two. Parking could be an issue at this eatery. However, their service is quick so you won?t have to wait for long.

On a weekend, be sure to reach the shop before 1pm because all the lassi gets sold out by then. On weekdays though, if you are lucky, a few glasses remain after 3pm.

They serve lassi in disposable earthen pots. So hygiene is not a cause for any worry. Their lassi comes in two sizes, and the price for the small one is Rs.15 ($0.27), while the larger ones range from Rs.30-40 ($0.55 ? $0.72USD). Opt for the larger one if you know that your stomach will be able to bear the thick creamy (malai) shake. Other than the normal sweet and salty ones, they have saffron and mango flavored lassi as well. While the former has an interesting taste to it, avoid the latter when it?s not mango season (else you might be drinking one with artificial flavors).

This shop is small and is lined with trays of the yogurt shake. It has no seating, so you will have to stand and drink your lassi, but the lassis are so fresh and tasty that it remains a much sought after place by both tourists and locals alike.

Where to eat in East India?

4. Balaram Mullick & Radharam Mullick, Padmapukur Road, Bhawanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal

Kolkata is synonymous with sweets ? the rosogolla (spherical cottage cheese based sweet), the sandesh, or even the mishti doi (sweet yogurt). One sweet shop that is very well known is Balaram Mullick & Radharam Mullick (open from 6.30am to 11pm). In fact, they have earned quite a name for themselves for producing sweets with a twist (like the chocolate sandesh, baked rosogolla, and the mango doi).

The sweets that have remained most popular are the traditional ones like talshaash, jolbhora, sor bhaja, kachagolla, abarkhabo, mihidana, sitabhog, patisapta, and the rasmalai. They are known most of all for their mishti doi and the chanar payesh (a dessert made of small cottage cheese balls in sweet creamy milk). Winters, of course mean sweets made of nolen gur (jaggery).

This small sweet shop located at Padmapukur started more than a hundred years back in 1885 and has continued its tradition since then. It began when Ganesh Chandra Mullick came from Konnagar in Hooghly and set up a shop on a rented 450 square feet of land in Bhawanipore. This was after his three year stint as a sweet maker in a shop in North Calcutta. The shop began by selling only three types of sandesh ? kora pak, norom pak, and sandesh made of nolen gur. What he started was carried forward by his brother Balaram Mullick and his son Radharaman Mullick. Now it is run by Pradip?Mullick, his brother, their spouses, and children.

Today this shop has grown in size with a neat seating arrangement, colorful decor, and even air conditioning. What has remained constant; however, are the traditional methods of making the sweets. They still use the age old iron pots and long wooden spatula to make their sweets. Sweets like the pantua and langcha still continue to be made over charcoal fire and mihidana is still fried in pure ghee. They even avoid artificial flavors and instead use the real fruit like mango, kiwi, custard apple, and oranges. Also, chocolates like Barry-Callebaut are used to make the chocolate based sweets.

The sweets are not too steeply priced especially given the quality, freshness, and the variety of sweets that they offer. Two people can get their stomachs filled with sweets for Rs. 60-70 (~$1.10USD).

5. Roll House, K G Marg, Gangtok, Sikkim

Roll House, a small, yellow and blue painted, hole-in-the-wall (hardly 10 feet by 10 feet) shop, is located on a narrow alley that branches out from M.G. Marg and goes towards the Sadar Police Station taxi stand. Its huge sign board will make sure that you don?t miss the shop.

It started operation after Raju Sharma (or Raju bhai as he is fondly called), the manager, went to Kolkata and got a taste of what authentic rolls meant. Initially; however, business was very dismal for him. With the locals of Gangtok wanting to eat only momos (dumplings) and thukpa (noodle soup), rolls weren?t sought after. He tried to entice them by distributing free rolls, but that did not work either. As Raju recalls, ?There were times when I used to wait on M.G. Marg and request tourists to come and try the rolls. Selling even 3-4 rolls a day used to be a challenge.? Things finally changed when he included momos in the menu too. Slowly people began to walk in to eat momos and began tasting the rolls as well. Soon the rolls became hugely popular, and today during the tourist season he sells more than 3000 rolls in a day.

Roll House has vegetable rolls, vegetable cheese rolls, paneer (cottage cheese) rolls and cheese rolsl on its menu. Of these, paneer rolls are the most popular. However, this eatery serves only vegetarian rolls. So for those who might have tasted chicken and egg rolls at Nizam?s in Kolkata, developing a taste for vegetarian rolls might take a while. Momos are also popular because they are bigger and lighter in size compared to the others in the vicinity.

Don?t worry about the hygiene because the paranthas that are used to make the rolls get fried in good quality oil on tawas right in front of you, and the momos are made fresh every day.

With only a small counter dividing the place between the roll makers and the roll eaters, don?t think about sitting and eating here. However, despite the cramped space, none are pushed away or ignored. In any case, the clean M.G. Marg with rows of benches and blooming flowers in pots is a great place to sit, chew on a hot roll, and soak in the crisp air that Gangtok offers year round.

This small roadside eatery is a complete value for money with a double paneer or a cheese-paneer roll priced between Rs. 40-50 (~$0.80USD) and Rs. 30 ($0.54USD) for a plate of eight momos.

Raju has plans of opening another shop in Gangtok. But lack of space is holding him back. Until he does, Roll House on M.G. Marg is the place to be.

Where to eat in Central India?

6. Ram Raja Restaurant, Sheesh Mahal Road, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

The first thing that catches your eye as you enter this eatery, owned by Parbat & Rani, is its advertisement of the temple view that reads ?as recommended by Lonely Planet,? and that it serves Italian and Korean food. It is a small eatery located near the Fort Bridge leading up to the palace, and it has a few tables covered with red and white checkered tablecloths. However, if you wish to experience the surroundings, then it is better to sit in the backyard. For this, you will need to find your way through the family section of the restaurant and then through a dimly lit kitchen and storage area till you reach the open backyard. As you order your food, don?t be surprised if you find either the owner?s friend sitting with you and entertaining you to poetry and songs or the monkeys chattering on the trees as a friendly cow comes up to you to say hello. You can also entertain yourself by watching fresh aubergines from the family?s vegetable plot being roasted over clay fire or even try your hand at rolling the chapatis with a ball of dough,

This eatery serves a fine Indian thali of roti, rice, daal, gobhi matar (cauliflower and peas), chana (chickpeas), paneer (cottage cheese) and yogurt. The vegetable dish in the thali usually keeps changing, and you might even find one made of jasmine flowers. If you want to try their Korean dishes, then try the kimchi, a pungent pickle made of radish or the shakshuka, a dish made of either poached or fried eggs in a tomatoes, onion, and Indian spices sauce. It is usually served with a couple of slices of white bread. You could even try their pizza that is topped with vegetables and lots of cheese. It is prepared over wood fire which gives it a nice smoky taste.

This place is quite a value for money with the shakshuka priced at Rs. 40 ($0.72USD) and the pizza at Rs. 100 ($1.80USD).

Except for the fact that the washroom is located right next to the kitchen, the restaurant is quite a clean place. Not only is the food fresh with most of the vegetables coming from their own garden, but it is also served in a very neat and clean manner. The eatery is also a tidy place thanks to the family who runs it.

Where to eat in West India?

7. Bade Miyan, Colaba, Mumbai, Maharashtra

Bade Miyan, a historical roadside eatery of Mumbai, was started by Mohammed Yasin in 1960. To maintain authenticity, the recipes of this eatery have been handed down from generation to generation.

Bade Miyan is located in a narrow, dark lane behind the Taj Mahal Hotel. Some of the landmark places near it are the Gateway of India and Cafe Leopold. With around thirty plastic chairs and tables spread out on the footpaths, there is nothing remotely classy about this place (if the plastic don?t appeal to you, and they might not, because there is a gutter nearby, you can always sit in your car, eat, and zip off once you are done). Yet it?s a place that cannot be ignored. The kebabs roasting on coals are excellent. Even the top Bollywood stars might pay a visit for a meal. Since the time of Raj Kapoor, an icon of Hindi cinema, stars come here to gorge on the food. Despite literally being a thela (barrow) shop, one can find some of the trendiest crowds eating here until late into the night.

The most popular dishes that Mohammed Ismail Sheikh, son of the founder, recommends are roomali rotis (very thin Indian flat bread) with chicken bhuna, mutton boti, bheja (brain) fry, seekh kebabs for the non vegetarians and paneer bhurji and masala paneer for the vegetarians. These dishes taste best with a chilled soft drink. And a meal for two would not cost you more than Rs. 500-600 ($9-11USD).

Bade Miyan has also kept the vegetarian and non-vegetarian counters separate, keeping in mind that many don?t like the same utensils to prepare both type of foods.

Until earlier this year, the eatery used to remain open all through the night. But rules have changed that. They now shut down by 1am. As for their rush hours; it?s between 9pm to 11pm. It?s best to avoid this time because you just might have to wait for over half an hour for a waiter to come and take your order.

Ayub?s around the corner gives some competition to Bade Miyan. However, the latter has a huge set of loyalists who have and will keep returning to this joint for their roomali rotis and chicken bhuna.

8. Souza Lobo, Calangute beach, North Goa

If you are in North Goa, then do try and visit Souza Lobo on Calangute beach. It is located on the main entrance to the beach (on the left side while facing the sea). Cars are not allowed in front of the restaurant. But the walk to the place is a very short one.

With its simple d?cor, tables with red tablecloths and wooden chairs, there is nothing fancy about the place. But it has been there for almost 80 years now and is known for the authentic Goan dishes that it serves. And they are open during off season as well.

During high season, this shack is quite full. So you might have to wait for 5-10minutes before you are given a seat. Try and get one overlooking the sea. Late evenings, when there is live music (and you can request your songs), is the best time to visit this place. They put out the tables on the beach then. Also, they are open until 11pm.

Other than the tandoori prawns, lobster thermidor, and crab xacuti, you may want to try their prawn cocktail, butter garlic crab or squid, king fish fry, pork sorpotel with rice, or pork vindaloo. If you are in the mood to experiment a little, then try their ox tongue, stuffed avocado and steak filled with ham and cheese, and baked crab meat. They also serve a seafood platter filled with crabs, king prawns, squid, oysters, and red snapper. Some of their desserts like the Bebinca (a multi layered cake) and Dodol (made of coconut jiggery) are also quite popular.

Their food does tend to be a little spicy. However, if that does not suit your palette then do ask to make it less spicy. The staff is efficient and courteous enough to listen to your request. Some dishes can be a little expensive, but overall it is a reasonably priced place. A meal for two would range between Rs. 350-Rs500 (without alcohol).

Where to eat in South India?

9. MTR, Lalbagh Road, Bengaluru, Karnataka

MTR, or the Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, at Lalbagh Road in Bengaluru, is the place for you if you are looking for authentic Bangalorean food.

Even though the food is authentic, getting a seat can be quite a challenge. In fact, be prepared to wait from anywhere between 10 ? 40 minutes. The larger the group, the longer the wait. Most of the time you will find that both the waiting rooms are also full and people are standing outside as well. On a very busy day, even when you are finally given a table, you might find that you have to share a table with a different group. Their service is very efficient though, and the eatery has regulars who have been visiting this place for more than fifty years.? Try and have a chat with Mr. Janardhanam, who has been working here for close to forty years.

MTR is not a huge place but has been efficiently laid out with family rooms, a common dining area, and even a VIP room. The black and white pictures on colorful walls give it quite a cheery look.

MTR is popular for its masala dosa, rava idli, grape juice, gulab jamun, and the slightly bitter coffee that is served in silver cups. Also, even if you are full, do not miss eating the fruit salad and ice cream. Although it remains open from 6:30am to 11:00am and again from 12:30pm to 8:30 pm, be sure to reach by 9.30am or else they usually run out of vadas.

The food, although tasty, is very heavy because of the large amount of ghee that is used. So once you have your breakfast here, it is doubtful you will be able to stomach the lunch. This place is quite a value for money though, with a dosa priced only at around Rs. 30 ($0.54USD), and a plate of rava idli at Rs. 18 ($0.32USD).

10. Bawarchi, RTC X Roads, Musheerabad, Hyderabad

There are a number of Bawarchi restaurants in Hyderabad. However, the original one that began in 1992 is right in front of the Sandhya Theatre on RTC X Road. It?s not a posh restaurant (despite having an a/c seating section) and yet retains its popularity. ?Most of the time that it is open (10am ? 11pm) you will have to stand in a queue outside for at least 15-20 minutes. The taste of the biriyani makes up for the wait though.

Bawarchi?s competition is with Paradise. However most usually prefer the former over the latter because they serve large quantities (one plate is enough to fill two people), and the quality of the food in terms of the spices used and the lightness of the food is much better, too.

The chicken and mutton biriyani are the most popular, followed by mutton curry, tangdi kabab, and kadhai veg. This place is a little expensive compared to other roadside eateries (approximately Rs.400-500 -$7-9USD- for a meal for two, without alcohol), but the food is worth the money that you spend.

Bawarchi, however, has no parking or even valet parking, and you will have to park your car next to a bus stop a little distance away. Also, if you are traveling with a lady, it is better if you get the food packed (and the parcel counter works super fast) rather than sit amidst the jostling crowd on chairs which look a little old. However, if you do decide to sit and eat, then the a/c room is better than the rooftop seating.

All said, if you want to taste biriyani that is traditional to Hyderabad, then do visit Bawarchi.

India is dotted with roadside eateries in every city, town and village. While the above make it into my ?Top 10? list, there are many more that should not be missed. So next time you are visiting any place in India, try to walk into a roadside eatery to experience the real taste of that state.

Cutler returns with roar for Bears

QB throws touchdown pass two weeks after suffering concussion against Texans

Image: Minnesota Vikings v Chicago BearsGetty Images

Jay Cutler shares a laugh with Matt Spaeth as they wait for a touchdown replay call.

updated 6:53 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

CHICAGO - The Chicago Bears got Jay Cutler back from a concussion, only to lose three more stars to injuries.

Start with Devin Hester. Add Matt Forte and Charles Tillman to the list, and just for good measure, throw in two starting guards.

Consider this a painful win.

Cutler threw for 188 yards and a touchdown after missing a game, and the Bears broke it open early in a 28-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

The injuries, however, tempered some of the good feelings.

Tied with Green Bay for the NFC North lead and just a game ahead of Minnesota (6-5) coming in, the Bears (8-3) grabbed a 25-3 halftime lead thanks to Cutler's pinpoint passing. The defense held Adrian Peterson in check early on, although he finished with 108 yards rushing.

Chicago also came away with three more takeaways to increase its total from a league-leading 30 entering the game to 33.

The rather easy win came after back-to-back losses to Houston and San Francisco, but it also came with a heavy price.

The Bears lost Hester, a receiver and record-setting return specialist, early to a concussion. And that was just the start.

Forte, their top running back, hobbled to the tunnel midway through the third quarter with an ankle injury. Coach Lovie Smith said Tillman, their star cornerback, also hurt his ankle.

Besides those three, the Bears lost both guards in the third quarter to knee sprains, with Lance Louis and Chris Spencer going down. Louis' injury on a blindside hit by Jared Allen as Antoine Winfield returned an interception forced Chicago to go with Gabe Carimi, who lost the right tackle job to Jonathan Scott.

Spencer, meanwhile, was in the lineup after Chilo Rachal left the team.

If the Bears are going to develop any continuity on the line, well, don't expect it anytime soon.

"I don't think it's possible now," Cutler said. "With all the moving parts we have and Lance going down, you're not going to have that. We're going to have to roll with the guys we have and see what we have, lean on our defense as we have before, run the ball well. Be efficient through the air. See how far we go."

As for Cutler, he looked sharp after missing Monday's blowout loss at San Francisco.

Back after being knocked out of the Texans game on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Tim Dobbins, he got off to a scorching start and completed 23 of 31 passes with an interception to go with his TD.

"I felt good," Cutler said. "It was a matter of going through the motions, talking to the doctors. I had a good week of practice, a shorter week with the Monday game and Thanksgiving."

Brandon Marshall caught 12 passes for 92 yards and became the first Bears receiver since Marty Booker in 2002 to go over 1,000 yards. He now has 1,017 yards this season, his sixth straight with 1,000 or more.

"In the third quarter, I leaned over to Jay and said, `That catch puts me at 1,000 yards for six seasons in a row.' And he looked at me and said, `You're disgusting,"' Marshall, the Bears' big offseason acquisition, said, laughing.

He added he knew he was closing in because followers on Twitter had mentioned it.

On defense, Henry Melton set the tone by sacking Christian Ponder on the first play from scrimmage. Nick Roach set up the first touchdown by knocking the ball out of Peterson's hands. Chris Conte set another TD with a 35-yard interception return, and Julius Peppers blocked a field goal.

The league's leading rusher, Peterson tied Robert Smith's club record with a 100-yard performance for the fifth straight game even though he managed just 25 in the first half. He also lost two fumbles and had to catch a cab to the stadium and arrived about 90 minutes before kickoff.

Ponder wasn't much help, going 22 of 43 with 159 yards and a touchdown along with an interception. His favorite target, Percy Harvin, sat out his second straight game with a sprained left ankle, and the Vikings lost for the third time in four games.

"We knew what we were getting into," Peterson said. "They wanted to make a statement. I thought it was more so what we did, giving the ball away, not making routine plays. Can't wait to see them again."

He won't have to wait long, with the Bears visiting Minnesota on Dec. 9.

Cutler completed 15 of 17 passes for 117 yards in the first half, and the Bears jumped out a big lead after a shaky start on offense.

Forte fumbled on Chicago's first play from scrimmage, leading to a 40-yard field goal by Blair Walsh - all the scoring the Vikings did in the half.

The Bears broke it open late in the second half.

Bush scored from the 1 and holder Adam Podlesh ran in for a 2-point conversion that made it 18-3.

Ponder got picked off by Conte and he returned it 35 yards to the Minnesota 13. That led to a scoring strike from Cutler to a lunging Matt Spaeth on the next play.

NOTES: Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he and Peterson were going to have a talk about punctuality after Sunday's delayed arrival. "There is something that Adrian and I need to talk about regarding getting to the stadium," he said. ... Allen thought his hit on Louis after Winfield's interception was a clean one. "I turned around, he was running to make a tackle and I threw myself into him to make a block. My condolences to him and his family. I never, ever, try and intentionally hurt anybody."

Really? Breathing Exercises Can Relieve Asthma - NYTimes.com

Really?

Anahad O?Connor tackles health myths.

THE FACTS

Breathing exercises are among the most popular alternative therapies for asthmatics. But do they work?

According to a recent report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the answer depends on the technique. Some appear effective in reducing asthma severity, but there is little evidence to support others.

In the exhaustive, 219-page report, researchers examined 22 randomized studies of breathing techniques. Among the most common are hyperventilation-reduction techniques like the Buteyko method, which instructs asthmatics to breathe shallowly and slowly through the nose when short of breath. The report also looked at yoga breathing exercises and so-called inspiratory-muscle training, which involves exercises and devices that make inhaling more difficult in order to strengthen muscles.

The researchers found the most robust body of evidence supported hyperventilation-reduction breathing techniques, which achieved ?medium to large improvements in asthma symptoms and reductions in reliever medication use of approximately 1.5 to 2.5 puffs per day.?

Looking at inspiratory training approaches, the researchers could not find enough credible research to draw any firm conclusions. They did find some evidence for yoga exercises, which typically require deep breaths ? usually through the nose ? with extended exhalation. But most of the evidence came from studies in India, where yoga exercises are more intensive and frequent than in the United States.

Still, the authors said, ?Patients with asthma who are students of yoga and willing to undertake intensive training may find benefits of asthma-targeted practice with a trained yoga practitioner.?

THE BOTTOM LINE

Breathing exercises may help relieve asthma, though the efficacy varies.

Childhood Obesity Battle Your Health Journal | Your ... - Len Saunders

From The Clarion Ledger?..

One tool in Mississippi?s attack on childhood obesity? The combi-oven.

A cross between a steamer and an oven, cafeteria managers say it can make those french fries crisp without all that waistline-expanding oil. Plus, its computerized brain can be programmed to cook almost anything, and it doesn?t stink up and splatter grease all over the kitchen. The only problem? One oven will cost a school about $18,000. And most schools actually need two to cook for hundreds of children.

But a foundation created by a retired physician has stepped in to help.

Dr. John Bower spent his career caring for Mississippians with kidney disease, setting up a nonprofit chain of dialysis centers. Using money from the sale of those centers, his Bower Foundation is now attacking one of the root causes of kidney disease ? obesity.

The foundation recently announced $900,000 in grants for schools to buy combi-ovens, with school districts required to put up half the cash. That should be enough to buy 100 ovens, equipping 50 schools. The foundation has already funded purchases at 84 schools.

?We ask the schools to remove their fryers when they put these products in,? executive director Anne Travis said. ?It?s been a great way to improve the nutritional content of the food.?

Federal money has paid for ovens at 59 other schools. But many districts, once they?ve gotten some outside money to introduce them to the appliance, have become believers and started paying for them on their own.

?We are ready not to wait on grants,? said Cynthia Coleman, child nutrition director in DeSoto County, Mississippi?s largest public school district.

Today, 11 DeSoto schools have combi-ovens. Coleman said that her goal is to install ovens and replace fryers in one school cluster each year. Besides the expense of buying the ovens, Coleman said more than $5,000 in electrical and plumbing work is usually required for installation. Because the oven is a steamer, it needs a water line connection.

For the foundation, the main benefit is a reduction in fat and calories. A half-cup serving of traditional fries has 88 calories and 4.6 grams of fat, while a half-cup of baked fries has 73 calories and 2.1 grams of fat. Over one school year, a large high school switching to baked fries could take 5.4 million calories out of the cumulative diet of students, with 900,000 fewer grams of fat served.

Main Plot and Quests

Slender Man- Lost Souls of Gainsboro Hills

Hello everyone. After experiencing many roleplays on this site, I've noticed that one of the most frustrating things is that roleplayers can often get stuck and "not know what to do".
Thats why I've incorporated a "Quest System" in this roleplay. Each character will be assigned tasks and encounter various obstacles throughout the story. As an example, in the beginning of the story I've asked Derrick Maple to go and interview the family of a missing child. At this point Derrick can take full charge of this quest, has full autonomy and can write how things turned out. Also note that you don't have to wait for me to tell you what to do. You can assign yourselves quests, make up your own side characters, etc. Be creative and find something to do. Just a couple points to keep in mind:

1) Although we don't have an exact set "Ending", we can agree on a main plot and write our posts accordingly. So the main plot is this:
a) We don't really know if Slender Man really exists. He could just be figment of our collective imagination.
b) If Slender Man is real, The mystery is whether or not the people he kidnaps are still alive or not. If they are, where does he keep them?
c) Perhaps Slender has some sort of weakness???
d) What are the reasons why Slender is so interested in this town?

2) Your character should encounter difficulties and trials. These are important because it shows your character's personality.

3) Make up your own side characters and places that are related to the main plot. Some examples might be people who know a thing or two about Slender, certain objects or places that might be related to Slender, or people who can give you clues on where to go and who to talk to.

Financial infidelity - Winnipeg Free Press

Despite a six-figure family income, these parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Enlarge Image

Despite a six-figure family income, these parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

Cheryl and Larry are seeing red.

But they're not angry so much as they're frustrated, anxious and a little perplexed about how they could be racking up debt after all they've been through over the past few years.

Larry's, Cheryl's finances

INCOME:

Larry: $81,619 ($5,395 net a month)

Cheryl: $38,000 ($2,202 net a month)

MONTHLY EXPENSES: $3,936

DEBTS:

Car loan: $12,000 owing at zero interest

Mortgage: $50,000 owing; 5.15 per cent fixed rate

Larry credit cards: $6,600, 19.99 per cent

Cheryl credit card: $1,000; 19.99 per cent

ASSETS:

Home: $193,000

Cheryl Group RRSP: $3,468

RESP: $1,039

NET WORTH: $117,907

"We are both trying to re-establish our credit after finishing a consumer proposal in the last year," says Cheryl, 41.

"We owned a small business and incurred a lot of debt while running it."

The couple, who both work in sales, grossed almost $120,000 combined last year or about $7,757 in take home pay a month.

Despite the six-figure family income, the parents of two young children have virtually no savings. Larry has no work pension and Cheryl only recently enrolled in hers.

Yet they have racked up their credit cards to the tune of $6,600, and they've done so only in the last six months after individually applying for credit without telling each other.

Although they have little other debt -- they owe $50,000 on the house and have a car loan -- balancing their household budget is an elusive goal.

In the past, Cheryl has largely left managing the finances to Larry, but she now realizes she will have to play a bigger role.

"Larry doesn't know where his stuff is half the time and he's very laissez-faire about money," she says.

"Considering we just paid off the consumer proposal, really scrimping and saving in, we were hoping to get a little breathing room, but it seems our situation hasn't improved at all."

Debt counsellor Christi Posner says, on paper, this couple should be in good shape financially because their income far exceeds their expenses. Yet they are still struggling.

"What this tells me is that there is a deeper issue here," says Posner, with the non-profit agency Credit Counselling Society.

"Debt is merely the symptom of a larger underlying problem."

At the heart of their problem is poor communication. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

"The two of them have kept separate bank accounts, and secret credit cards have been applied for and used," she says. "Secrets about spending, saving and debt get in the way of open and honest communication and can be detrimental to personal relationships; this is called financial infidelity."

And it can be very destructive to a family's well being -- both financially and emotionally. Fortunately, Larry and Cheryl are not deeply in debt, and they have overcome a major financial setback -- the failure of a business.

Posner says the prescription to their problem is straightforward. They need to talk regularly about finances.

"They should start with something routine, such as how to better utilize Cheryl's free bank accounts to organize household bill payments, or how to set limits on spending," she says.

Of course, sitting down to discuss finances can be an uncomfortable experience at first because it can lead to conflict. But this is natural and even productive because they will learn where they both stand regarding saving, spending and their future.

It's all about values, Posner says.

"Simply put, values are about what's important to us," she says. "If Larry and Cheryl argue about money, the real issue they're arguing about may be much deeper and harder to see."

?

Values are built on past and present experiences and relate to our education, upbringing, culture, age, gender, work experience and even health.

"When it comes to our finances, we tend to spend money on things we value."

For example, someone who values security usually saves and avoids debt. But another person may value excitement and freedom, and spending money is a way to express that.

In a relationship, people with different values can still get along quite well, but they need to be open about their differences.

Once Larry and Cheryl are talking, they can begin focusing on the numbers, and a good place to start is their expenses. Posner says this is a red flag in their situation because they're obviously underestimating their costs.

"The list of expenses submitted by Larry and Cheryl total $3,936 a month," she says. "That means that there is over $3,600 that is unaccounted for every month."

Their budget, however, seems to be missing a number of important costs, such as gasoline, car repairs, clothing, entertainment, gifts and hair care.

"After adding in averages for those and other categories, I estimate their expenses are likely closer to $5,866, but that still leaves over $1,700 unaccounted for monthly."

For the next couple of months, they need to track their spending, aiming to reduce discretionary costs between five and 10 per cent.

Posner says one particular area where they likely can trim expenses is ATM withdrawals.

"Over a 30-day period, there were $1,600 in ATM withdrawals from Larry's account, which will be very hard to trace back," she says. "I recommend limiting any cash withdrawals unless they are living on an all cash system and tracking each penny."

Once they get a handle on where the money is going, they can start focusing on the future. This involves building a budget they can live with that incorporates paying the bills, having a little fun, saving for the future and eliminating their debt.

They certainly earn enough money to address all goals, but their short-term focus should be eliminating the credit card debt. Allowing high interest debt to linger is an enormous waste of their money.

"By making minimum payments only, it will take Larry and Cheryl over 50 years to repay their credit card," Posner says.

And they have no reason to be making only the minimum payments. The couple should easily be able to come up with a plan to pay off the cards in six months -- paying about $635 in interest -- while still working toward their other financial goals.

And among those goals should be setting money aside for emergencies, which is just as important as saving for college and retirement.

"Larry's income fluctuates from month to month, so it is essential they put money aside when he earns extra income to help out when he earns less income," she says.

Once they're on track, building up a 'just-in-case' reserve to cover six months of expenses, then they can start thinking about saving more for the long-term.

And Larry and Cheryl have lots to think about. Their future is promising, Posner says.

They just need to talk regularly and honestly about their finances.

"It's all about working together as a team toward the same goal."

Emerging women leaders in technology sectors from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions engage in a mentorship and exchange program at American leading companies. ?In 2012, 41 Emerging Leaders participated from?Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, and Yemen.

The TechWomen team is made up of diverse women who have found success in a variety of technical careers. For five weeks, they share their experiences, challenges, and best methods. The first three weeks focus on professional work and cultural enrichment ,while the last three?involve panel discussions and breakout sessions centered on leadership skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

This year, Google hosted one such workshop exploring innovative techniques and approaches for engaging young girls in male-dominated fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The presentations were accompanied by female leaders from Techbridge, MAGIC (More Active Girls in Computing), Telecentre.org Foundation, and Iridscent.

After five weeks, the women return home with new-found vigor. Thekra Dwairi from Jordan says that before TechWomen, she?d never shared her idea to start an NGO, Edugirl. ?Most NGOs focus on university?aged students. I want to focus on girls in neglected areas who get married early, who are isolate and who don?t have anyone who is fighting for them.? Thekra is currently working on an action strategy to promote and fund her Edugirl initiative.

Rayane Hazimeh will soon launch ?Nora Techadventures,? an online animation series that features dynamic characters who use STEM skills to explore technology and embark on new challenges. ?She explains how TechWomen helped her re-define her vision, ?It is now my personal mission to live a life that positively and valuably impacts other young girls.?

Loubna Lahmici?went on to create?the first coupon website in Algeria. Her site, Dzreduc.com, is transforming consumer practices in Algeria by providing discounted printable and mobile coupons to local consumers. Lahmici notes,??My experience?gave me insights into cutting-edge technologies, connecting me with counterparts, and opening up new opportunities for the growth of my business.? Within the first three weeks, the site had registered more than 13,000?visits, 800 subscribers, and 500 downloaded?coupons.

TechWomen The experience also inspires the TechWomen team. ??I am in such awe of the bravery, openness, energy and ambition of the Emerging Leaders,? states Heather Ramsey, Director of Strategic Partnerships.? ?This experience is not easy, but the women take it on with grace, tenacity, a spirit of curiosity and a desire to build real understanding. I am so grateful to be a part of TechWomen!?

My Wife Has a Migraine Headache - Profound Health Blog

My wife has been dealing with a migraine headache for the last three days. My heart is broken for her because I know that this has got to be a very painful experience. She asked me if I would be willing to drive her to nyc chiropractors for her appointment. Of course, I told her that I would do whatever I could. I have been trying to help her by cooking dinner and doing household chores so that she can relax.
