Ryder Cup golf: Ian Poulter keeps Europeans in the hunt

Medinah, Ill. ? Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley helped stake the Americans to their biggest lead in the Ryder Cup in more than 30 years. Ian Poulter, eyes bulging and fists shaking with every clutch putt, at least gave Europe some big momentum over the final frantic hour Saturday at Medinah.

Right when it looked as if the Americans were a lock to win back the cup, Poulter birdied his last five holes to win a crucial point and keep everyone guessing. Steady chants of "USA! USA!" gave way to snappy serenades of "Ole, Ole" as both sides trudged to the team rooms in darkness to prepare for 12 singles matches on Sunday.

The Americans still had a big lead, 10-6. Europe at least had hope.

"The last two putts were massive," European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said after watching Poulter stay undefeated in this Ryder Cup by rolling in one last birdie putt from 12 feet. "That gives us a chance. It?s been done before in the past. Tomorrow is a big day."

Only one team has ever rallied from four points behind on the final day ? the United States in that famous comeback at Brookline in 1999. Olazabal remembers it well. He was in the decisive match when Justin Leonard rolled in a 45-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole.

Is the Spaniard a big believer in fate?

"I believe momentum will come our way," Olazabal said. "Why not tomorrow?"

The final two matches Saturday were a showcase of what the Ryder Cup is all about ? one brilliant shot after another, birdies on every hole, suspense at every turn.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia were on the verge of blowing a 4-up lead to hard-charging Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, hanging on when Donald matched two birdies with Woods, including a tee shot into the 17th that plopped down 2 feet from the cup.

Their 1-up win kept Woods winless for the first time in a Ryder Cup going into Sunday. Woods and Stricker lost all three of their matches, even though Woods made five birdies on the back nine for the second straight day.

Woods was thinking more of the big picture.

"Being up four is nice," he said. "We are in a great spot right now to win the cup."

Poulter and Rory McIlroy were 2 down with six holes to play against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson when McIlroy made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 13th, and Poulter took it from there.

"We had to make birdies, and wow! Five in a row. It was awesome," Poulter said. "I?ve got the world No. 1 at my side, backing me up. It allowed me to hit some golf shots."

The crowd was still buzzing as it filed out of Medinah, and Poulter grinned.

"It?s pretty fun, this Ryder Cup," said Poulter, who raised his career record to 11-3-0.

It?s been plenty fun for the Americans, who for the first time have not lost any of the four sessions since the Ryder Cup switched to the current format in 1979. Mickelson and Bradley were flawless in foursomes, matching a Ryder Cup record for largest margin with a 7-and-6 win over Donald and Lee Westwood.

London calling: Fair result, great basketball

Vladimir Stankovic at 2012 London Olympic Games Veteran sportswriter and Euroleague.net collaborator Vladimir Stankovic has been following the best basketball on the continent longer than almost anyone journalist, writing for decades about the sport in major publications in both Serbia and Spain. Now, he is in London covering his seventh Summer Olympics and blogging about the men's basketball tournament for Euroleague.net.

Expectations were met, and as the British might say, they were met splendidly. The gold-medal game of the 2012 London Olympics was played by the United States and Spain, the best two teams in the tournament, and was a testament to how well basketball is played on both sides of the Atlantic. Spain was a more-than-worthy rival that forced the American stars to their limit. The final score of 107-100 proved to be the smallest difference in the 14 finals on which the USA has won the gold. All of the USA's previous opponents had fallen by between 11 and 32 points. Spain had to settle for its third silver medal, after 1984 and 2008, but each of them has shined a little brighter for demonstrating that this sport is consistently more global and more exciting.

The final in London was pretty similar to the one between the same opponents in Beijing 2008. Four years ago the score at the break was 69-61, an unbelievable 130 points. In the end, the Americans won by 118-107. In London, after the first 20 minutes, the score was 59-58 and the USA lead was only one point after 30 minutes, 83-82. The game was solved in the last 10 minutes, especially thanks to individual plays by Chris Paul, the long-range shooting of Kevin Durant and the virtuosity of LeBron James.

Taking a look at the stats, the better three-point shooting by the American team, 15 made to just 7 for Spain, was decisive. In other aspects of the game, Spain was as good, or even better. In assists, for instance, the final result was 22-13 for Spain. With the likes of Pau and Marc Gasol, plus Serge Ibaka, Spain had strength in the paint. Also, with Turkish Airlines Euroleague stars like Juan Carlos Navarro (19 of his 21 points in the first half) and Rudy Fernandez, Spain also had good long-range threats. With Jose Calderon and Sergio Llull there was no lack of direction and speed... Spain played a great game. Spain was a great team in the final, but the United States were a little greater. I hope that in Rio de Janeiro, four years from now, we will be able to witness a similar game. I also hope that the Americans keep on bringing their best players. Otherwise, they will surely lose their domination and it will also hurt this tournament , which was enjoyed by anyone and everyone who loves basketball: fans, players and experts alike. The joy with which the USA players celebrated the gold medal confirms that they want to take part in the Olympic Games. As Paul afterward: "There's nothing that can be compared to participating in the Olympics." He also criticized the idea of limiting the age of the players to 23, saying: "If this rule was effective right now, it wouldn't be such an excellent experience as this one."

In the end, the medals were for the best three teams. Russia is definitely back to the world elite, confirming its rise with the bronze. Argentina, with its own golden generation, could not end with a medal but they had a solid performance with options to the last seconds. I think that, in general, the tournament was pretty good, but the final was something to remember.

Ettore Messina, CSKA Moscow head coach and Sky Italy TV commentator, said: "The final was one of the best games I have ever seen and remember, and the tournament very good. I think that the medals have been fair but I am a little sad for Manu Ginobili, who could not say farewell to his national team with another medal. Maybe two bronze medals should be awarded."

The only problem I have seen in London 2012 is that no new young talent took center stage. Some, like Jonas Valanciunas (Lithuania), Alexey Shved (Russia) and Sergio Llull (Spain) are young, indeed, but well known already. I think that what was missing here were players like Ginobili at the Athens World Championship of 1998, Navarro in Sydney 2000, Luis Scola in the Indianapolis World Championship of 2002, Ricky Rubio in Beijing 2008... Super young players with a clear projection to become superstars.

In the end, we have to keep hope that this Olympic tournament has pushed basketball a little higher in Britain, most of all looking into the near future next May, when the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four will visit The 02 in London for the final event of the season, the Final Four. Most of Europe already knows the excitement that a Final Four generates, and now London has had a taste of the same in these truly satisfying Olympic Games for the sport of basketball. I can?t wait to return next May!

Four Splendid Gaming Apps... and NFL Pro 2013As Owen Good often reminds us, not every Gaming App of the Day is a good one. For every Bad Piggies, The Room or Bar Story 2 there are a dozen NFL Pro 2013s, and he seems to wind up playing them all.

Oftentimes we'll play gaming apps for our daily spotlight based on our own personal preferences. We'll see something that catches our eyes (like fishhooks) and we'll dive right in. I'm so sorry, Owen.

If it helps, there are at least three picks on this week's list that are spectacular! The Room is one of the best puzzle adventure games I've played in forever, Bad Piggies has those pigs in it, and Kirk's pick has anime people mixing drinks in a bar!

That's what you should do. Go to a bar. Bring your iPhone.

Hungry Snakes Trap Guam In Spidery Web

Isaac Chellman/Rice University

Invasive brown tree snakes have gobbled up most of Guam's native forest birds. Without these avian predators to keep their numbers in check, the island's spider population has exploded.

The Pacific Island of Guam is experiencing a population explosion ? of spiders.

There are more spiders there now than anyone can remember. To get a sense of how weird the situation is, I started out in Maryland. On my front porch, overlooking the Severn River.

At 6:30 in the morning on a cool fall day, I find two spider webs in a matter of five minutes. But if I were on the island of Guam, I might find 70 or 80 spider webs in five minutes.

Ecologist Haldre Rogers realized something strange was going on as she went roaming through the jungle on Guam and three nearby islands. "While I was doing that," she recalls, "it appeared that there were tons more spiders on Guam than there were on other islands."

Rogers is a researcher from the University of Washington, and she was actually in Guam looking for snakes. The brown tree snake invaded Guam over 60 years ago ? they sneaked in aboard boats or in the wheel wells of airplanes. And now they're everywhere: about 2 million of them.

But the spider thing was just too bizarre to pass up. So Rogers started counting spider webs on the islands.

In the dry season, Guam had about 2 1/2 times more spider webs. "And 40 times more webs in the wet season than on the nearby islands," she says.

Isaac Chellman/Rice University

In the wet season, there are 40 times more spiders on Guam than there are on other nearby islands.

Forty?! "Forty times, yes," she assures me.

One that seemed to be everywhere was a great big yellow and black critter called Argiope appena, or the banana spider. "And actually," she says, "what we found was, their webs were much bigger on Guam than on the other islands, they were 50 percent larger on Guam."

More, bigger, better ... if you're a spider.

This all came about because the introduced tree snake multiplied only on Guam and ate almost all the birds. There are literally just a few hundred birds left there.

Since birds eat spiders, this is good news for spiders. In fact, great news, because birds also ate some of the bugs spiders eat, so there's now more food for spiders, too.

For ecologists, Guam is now a big experiment to see what happens when a top predator disappears from an ecosystem. They suspect plants could be affected too; many depend on birds to spread their seeds.

But Rogers wants to remind people that Guam is still a nice place. Says Rogers: "The average person doesn't come across that many spiders, because most people don't go traipsing around in the jungle that much."

If you do plan to do that, just watch where you're going.

US routs Australia in Sundhage's farewell game

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:09 a.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. ? On her final victory lap, Pia Sundhage hopped and high-stepped her way around the field.

As the U.S. women's national soccer team coach soaked in the cheers from the capacity crowd, her team began serenading her by belting out, "You are my Sunshine."

A fitting tribute since Sundhage has had the squad in perfect harmony for five years.

A fitting way to go out, too.

Abby Wambach broke a tie early in the second half and Alex Morgan added two goals and two assists, helping the U.S. beat Australia 6-2 Wednesday night in an international friendly that was Sundhage's farewell game.

"Today is Pia's day. We've been talking about it all day: What can we do to show her?" Wambach said. "She's a passionate woman about this game. We knew the best thing we could do was give her a win."

Sundhage announced earlier this month she was stepping away after leading the squad to back-to-back Olympic gold medals. She will return home to coach the Swedish national team.

Heather O'Reilly, Shannon Boxx and Sydney Leroux also scored for the Americans, who move to 21-0-2 against Australia.

The Australians went ahead 2-1 late in the first half on Sarah Walsh's low shot past Hope Solo. A few minutes later, Morgan tied up the game.

Wambach deflected in the decisive goal in the 53rd minute when she simply stuck her foot out after Morgan unleashed a shot.

And with that, the team was on its way to sending Sundhage out in winning fashion.

Sundhage leaves after a highly successful stint, going 91-6-10 in her time on the bench. Besides two Olympic gold medals, she also led the Americans to their first World Cup final in 12 years.

"She's built this game, helped elevate the game to a new level," said Solo, whose team won its 14th straight match. "So, there's not too much to be sad about. Of course, we're heartbroken that she's gone. But she's fulfilling her dreams and we're going to fulfill ours."

As a goodbye present, the team recently gave Sundhage a guitar that was signed by all the players in - surprise, surprise - the color of gold.

"It's the best present I ever got," she said.

They gave her quite a few memories along the way, too.

Sundhage's most poignant? That's easy: When the team roared back against Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup. Wambach tied it at 2 with a magnificent, leaping header in the 122nd minute. The U.S. eventually captured the match 5-3 on penalty kicks.

"Better than a movie," Sundhage said. "That is the moment of my soccer life."

This final performance wasn't too bad, either.

Morgan's performance against the Australians gives her 63 points this year. It's the most for a national player in a calendar year since 2004, when Wambach accounted for 75 points.

"We wanted to give her a good show," Morgan said. "We didn't have the right rhythm in the first half. We're happy that we got a win in Pia's last game."

After the match was over, Sundhage hugged everyone in sight. She also began signing through tears - Tina Turner's classic, "Simply the best."

It was a day of singing for Sundhage, who performed tunes in the pregame meeting as well. The song list included: "The Times They Are A-Changin" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane."

Sundhage came in singing and left the same way.

"When a coach comes in and you don't know who they are and they start singing songs to you, it's like, `What is this going to be? How is this going to go?"' Wambach said. "Thankfully, it went well. It turned out really well for us."

Over Sundhage's career, she has made a habit of jotting down notes filled with emotions and tactics. Lately, she's been looking back at those details, to remember how special these players were to her.

The feeling was mutual.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd is convinced she might not be wearing the red, white and blue if not for Sundhage, who changed the way the team played after taking over. Sundhage emphasized midfield play even more, making Lloyd a vital component.

"When Pia first came on, she saw me play in previous tournaments and said to me, `I really like how you play and really believe in you,"' Lloyd recounted. "From then on, she preached playing in the midfield, playing possession. That's right up my alley."

Now, the big question is who replaces Sundhage?

U.S. soccer federation president Sunil Gulati recently said a search committee has been assembled - one that includes former U.S. team standout Mia Hamm - and a replacement could be selected possibly next month.

"Heard they have it down to double-digit (candidates)," Solo said. "But I don't know who it's going to come down to."

A new voice will take some getting used to for the players. They're used to Sundhage's fun-loving demeanor. She laughed with them. She played guitar for them.

After O'Reilly's early goal, the team went over to Sundhage on the bench and played air guitar for her.

"If you look at her statistics alone, she's done a fabulous job," Lloyd said. "But it's not only stats; it's the way she is as a person. She brings so much joy and pleasure. It's contagious, the way she has so much passion for the game."

Morgan earned her first cap while playing for Sundhage. Now, she's one of the most recognizable faces on the team and younger kids frequently show up in the stands wearing her jersey.

"Pia has done so much for us. We really appreciate everything," Morgan said. "It's not typical that you send off a coach like this - on such a high note and such a happy note."

Center gets final OK to cut trees in space shuttle's path

Space shuttle Endeavour's arrival at LAX has been delayed until Friday, NASA announced Monday.

The California Science Center received final approval Monday to chop down 265 trees to make room for the space shuttle Endeavour as it rolls through the streets of Los Angeles.

To garner residents' support, the center sweetened the deal at the last minute and agreed to replant four times as many trees, repair additional sidewalks, and offer scholarships and job training.

"While we sincerely regret the loss of many majestic trees which have aided this community for decades, what we accomplished through this agreement is a greener South L.A. for the health of our community, as well as educational opportunities at the Science Center for generations to come," said a statement released through the Neighborhood Council groups' attorney, Gideon Kracov.

FULL COVERAGE: Space shuttle endeavour

In all, nearly 400 trees will be cut down in Inglewood and South Los Angeles in the 12-mile route between Los Angeles International Airport and the shuttle's permanent home in Exposition Park. (Of those, 119 are in South Los Angeles, 124 are in Westchester, 128 are in Inglewood and the rest are near LAX).

Community members packed the Board of Public Works meeting at City Hall on Monday morning to voice their concerns. Some residents said they felt slighted and left with few options.

"I'm tired of people coming to our community and doing things behind our backs and then at the last minute inviting us to the meetings and it's already too late," Ayana McCowen, 39, said to a boisterous crowd. "This is an injustice to me and my community."

South Los Angeles resident Lark Galloway-Gilliam, a driving force behind the deal, told the board of a recent visit to the California Science Center with a 10-year-old girl.

The youngster found a $20 bill on the floor of the museum, but instead of keeping it, she told Galloway-Gilliam she wanted to donate it to the Endeavour fundraising effort.

"She is why we are here today to sign this agreement," Galloway-Gilliam said. "She exemplifies the integrity, the graciousness of the community I call home. The space shuttle will provide an exciting exhibit for our children."

Near the end of the three-hour meeting, Commissioner Andrea Alarc?n applauded the work of residents in South Los Angeles communities.

"Your advocacy really pushed us to a new place," she said, adding later that the outspoken group was able to secure more improvements to their neighborhood.

Other neighborhoods, including Inglewood and Westchester, will receive the state minimum requirement of two replanted trees for every one removed.

In addition to the extra trees, the agreement calls for larger trees to be planted, $400,000 toward tree trimming, and up to five years of tree maintenance.

The California Science Center also agreed to provide at least 10 scholarships to area students, pay $100,000 to an education fund and train local teachers in science. Local youths will be hired to perform at least half of the tree maintenance.

Tree removal in Los Angeles could begin as early as next week in anticipation of a two-day parade from LAX to the California Science Center that will begin Oct. 12.

Although the parade is still on track, NASA officials pushed Endeavour's grand homecoming to Los Angeles back a day to Friday.

A cross-country farewell tour is still planned. On the back of a modified 747 aircraft, Endeavour will dip low over several NASA sites along the southern United States and spend one night in Houston before reaching Edwards Air Force base Thursday afternoon.

Endeavour will leave the Mojave Desert base early Friday, touring several landmarks across Northern California and the Los Angeles area before touching down at LAX midday.

NASA spokesman Michael Curie said despite the changes, officials were "expecting everything to fall into place."

Protection for humans on Mars

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? For six weeks NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has been working on the Red Planet. NASA also plans to send humans to Mars within the next 20 years. On the flight and during the stay on Moon or Mars the astronauts have to be protected against long exposure to cosmic radiation that might cause cancer.

On behalf of the European Space Agency ESA the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f?r Schwerionenforschung GmbH tests whether Moon and Mars regolith can be used to build shieldings for ground stations.

On Earth the atmosphere and the magnetic field weaken cosmic rays. But on Moon and Mars they pelt down unhamperdly. The cosmic radiation can harm astronauts and could cause cancer in the long run as a result of damage in DNA and cells.

Chiara La Tessa is manager of experiments in GSI biophysics. She explains why Moon or Mars ground stations would not be built from terrestrial high tech material: "In space travels every gram counts. Transporting building material through space would lead to a cost explosion. That is why ground stations would basically be built from Moon and Mars regolith -- especially the shielding. We know from the analyses done by rovers what the local sand and stones consist of. With this information one can produce Moon and Mars regolith on Earth and we test it for its properties." As cosmic rays are nothing else but fast ions that were accelerated by star explosions they can be simulated by an accelerator. The GSI facility is one of the few able to reproduce cosmic rays in an original way.

After the GSI team tested how well the stone slabs can protect against radiation in the American accelerator laboratory in Brookhaven, they now explore how many neutrons are produced in the materials when radiated.

If cosmic rays strike the stones with full speed they smash some atomic nuclei to pieces. The resulting free neutrons have a different effect on the human body than cosmic radiation. Depending on their speed they might even be more harmful.

At GSI the scientists now tested how strong the neutron effect is in Moon and Mars regolith and how far it passes through the material. ?I cannot estimate how the material is going to react to the radiation yet," says La Tessa. ?Will many neutrons be produced? How many fast and how many slow ones? This we will know when we analyzed our experiment data."

The tests funded by ESA were coordinated by Thales Alenia Space Italia. The prime contractor of ESA's project also designed the test plan in cooperation with GSI, chose the materials and evaluats the results.

Striking S.Africa miners cut wage demands

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine in South Africa have cut their basic wage demand to below 11,000 rand a month to try to end a six-week strike that halted platinum output at the world's third-largest producer, a negotiator said on Tuesday.

The demand is still way above the offer on the table from Lonmin.

The company, which is offering increases of between 9 and 21 percent, has said 12,500 rand would put thousands of jobs at risk and challenge the viability of the business. Basic pay for most underground workers is currently around 5,400 rand.

A Lonmin official said talks between the various parties had extended to 3 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Tuesday. They are due to resume at 1000 GMT.

"The demands came down to below 11,000 rand," Bishop Jo Seoka, who has been mediating in the talks between Lonmin and workers, told Reuters. "I'm very confident that something is going to happen today."

The strike turned violent last month, culminating in police shooting 34 miners at a rocky outcrop at Marikana, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. In all, 45 people have died in the Marikana unrest, which has spread beyond Lonmin to other platinum firms and other parts of the mining sector.

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), the world's top producer of the precious metal, said workers started trickling back to its Rustenburg mines on Tuesday after operations were suspended last week when machete-wielding strikers marched on shafts.

More details on shift worker attendance will be provided later on Tuesday.

South Africa is home to 80 percent of known reserves of platinum and is a major gold producer. Labour unrest this year has cost the industry 4.5 billion rand in lost output, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday.

Fearing the strike's growing impact on the economy and South Africa's investment reputation, the government launched a crackdown at the weekend that has included deploying members of the armed forces.

Search Engine Marketing, why is it crucial to your website ...

Why search engine marketing is crucial to promote your website?

Search Engine Marketing: Why is it so crucial to promote your website and business?

There are many effective ways to promote your website and SEM is one of them. To improve the website ranking in the search engines, Search engine marketing or SEM is the most effective way. It also describes purchasing paid listings among other search engine related activities. Before, starting with an SEM campaign, knowing the concept and benefits of optimization is always very important and then employs techniques that will bring prospects to your site. Just as when getting browsers to enter your store in the real world, the goal is the same here, convert those visitors into customers.

In today?s Internet and World Wide Web, more consumers are turning to search engines to find the products and services and they seek.? If you are out to establish a strong base of customers and strengthen your bottom line, making friends with the search engines is the way to go. SEM is a proven technique that has worked wonderfully for business owners looking to increase their website visibility online through the SERPs. Using this effective method will increase your online visibility so that the consumers who are after your products and services will find you very easily. As the method include a great combination of various effective techniques.

In the past few years, it has been seen that nearly 85% of website traffic is produced from the major search engines like Google, Yahoo & Bing. Due to these results, almost every online business owner is looking forward with optimization and marketing their websites for search engine traffic and to get most out of it. SEM includes a wide variety of techniques and the most important of all is the optimization.

The most popular and similarly used methods of SEM are mention below:

Search Engine Marketing Methods

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The concept simply known as SEO, search engine optimization describes the act of creating web pages that appeal to the search engines.? In general, it includes building link popularity and highly important, implementing relative keywords potential visitors are most likely to type into a search engine. These relative targeted keywords are inserted into the body text of the web page as well as in Title tags and Meta tags. SEO can be so effective that other SEM techniques might not even be necessary. However, not every method is required for a successful SEM campaign; but without SEO you just can?t do it.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

There is also an alternative for the people who don?t have time to spend on doing SEO. Achieving high rankings in search engines is not so easy job, so those who don?t have time rely on Pay Per Click (PPC) campaigns for high profile placements. PPC is an SEM technique that focuses on targeted audiences and particularly, generating sales. This is the type of advertising where you pay a predetermined fee when an internet user either clicks or visits your ads.

The key to SEO and SEM in general, is to know how web surfers go about searching for products and services they are interested in. Very rare surfers use industry language to search products or services, so in order to attract them you need to think like your audience. This is the reason, why SEO specialists give more weight on the keyword research. Always remember that whether it?s genuine SEO, PPC or any other techniques, keywords are the key of a successful Search Engine Marketing (SEM).

UK royal couple win French injunction on Kate topless photos

PARIS (Reuters) - A French court on Tuesday banned a gossip magazine from further publishing topless photographs of the wife of Britain's Prince William, the former Kate Middleton, and ordered it to hand the pictures over to the royal couple.

The injunction granted to the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge, as the couple are formally known, also prevents France's Closer magazine from selling the pictures to other media.

The court in Nanterre, near Paris, earlier opened a criminal investigation into charges that the photographer who took the shots and Closer breached the privacy of the prince and his wife.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome the judge's ruling," a spokeswoman for the royal couple said.

Closer will be fined 10,000 euros ($13,100) per day of delay in handing over the images, the court said in the civil ruling. The couple are also seeking damages from the weekly over its publication of the photographs in a five-page spread on Friday.

The pictures were taken while the couple were on holiday in a chateau in southern France and show the duchess slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bottoms.

Buckingham Palace has called the photo spread a "grotesque" invasion of the couple's privacy. The royal family want to make an example of Closer.

The pictures have rekindled memories in Britain of the media pursuit of William's mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while being chased by paparazzi.

British newspapers, fighting for their reputation after a string of scandals, have agreed not to publish the images, as has the British edition of Closer, which is managed separately.

The Sun tabloid screamed: "Find Le Rat" on its front page on Tuesday and said the photographer would be found and face jail.

The court said police would investigate whether there were grounds for criminal charges against Closer and its publisher, Italy's Mondadori, and the photographer.

On Monday, the publisher of tabloid The Irish Daily Star suspended its editor after the newspaper broke ranks with Irish and British peers, publishing pages from Closer with the photographs in its Saturday edition.

Italian gossip magazine Chi, also published by Mondadori, printed a 26-page special edition dedicated to the pictures on Monday. ($1 = 0.7612 euros)

Lately, I've gotten desperate (bad social skills, people thinking I'm a maniac, etc.), because there is no girl with what I have (Aspie's, in other words) out here in the PNW.

So..... I've decided to broaden my horizons, and look outside there area. I know, LDRSes have their risks.... what am I to do? I am just... I can't some up with the word. Let's seek some advice about them (long-distance relationships), and be serious about this. I have no advice about this, sadly.

Long distance relationships require a ton of trust and faith in a person, but they can work.

It helps to have a set goal in mind for when you're going to meet up (and eventually move in together?) and constantly working towards that.

Also keeping things open at least until the first meeting is a good policy, but ultimately that's up to whatever the partners agree upon.

It's not a replacement for short-distance relationships and physical interaction. Continue working on honing your social skills with others before you first meet.

I'd say they CAN, but it's more a matter of time. My friend married a girl he met online. However they met when he was in middle school, and he married her when he was like 21, but before they were married, they knew each other in person (with her living in his house for like 3-4 months while she found a place to stay in this state) for about 2 years. So that leaves a total of....7 years or so of knowing the person? They initially met on an anime forum, and then played WoW together. She's a nice girl, just perfect for my friend, I don't think my friend would do better in a million more tries.

I talked to one other girl who worked at Radio Shack, and she met her boyfriend online and they moved in with each other. She knew him for like 2-3 years.

So it's not like they can't work or anything like that, just the main thing is time is different online, I think. In some ways, online is more intimate, and in others less, so time to get to know a person is different. Just speaking of platonic friendships, I finally met one of my internet friends in person this summer, and I've known him since like 2004 or 2005. It was quite seemless meeting him, not really a case of meeting someone from the internet and being surprised. It was like meeting someone I knew all my life, because, well, I knew him for 1/3 of it. The friendship extended past online, when I had no internet for a bit, we'd call each other, we'd send each other packages (just random things lying around our houses we didn't need anymore, but the other person could use, ie, games, clothes), those sorta things.

So in all the relationships that I've seen that were successful online, the common thread seems to be a lot of time with the other person. That's the only way I've really seen them work and transition to real life. Online is interesting in that online, in some ways you can get to know a person better, and in some ways you won't. Online sometimes we'll reveal a lot more about ourselves, our past, etc, than we will to people we know in person, just because of the anonymity of online, but then you don't get to witness the person "in action" everyday and their dealings with you and others. Or, worst case scenario, can just BS everything completely online. So that's sort of a tradeoff. The other thing is online doesn't really have a higher success rate either, you just don't have to deal with as "real" consequences for failure. Again, in my dealings with platonic friends, I used to have like 20 AIM friends, now I got like 3. People can just stop talking to you after a while, or get legitimately busy and not contact you, or just straight out tell you that you suck one day and block you.

Lastly, I think online, one thing is it does is it removes barriers. I may not have met my online friends I have now if I didn't meet them online. I just probably wouldn't have talked to them based on first appearances, but online I've had friends that were quite different than me (sometimes preppy rich kids, haha) and basically the type of people I'd have never gotten the chance to know well in real life, and it makes sorta both sides recognize I guess the shared humanity of the other person. So I don't think geography matters quite as much as that when talking to people online, though to be fair, some geographical places are better than others, and unlike others here, I don't totally discount geography as a huge factor in your social life (which is why I plan to move someday.)

So I don't write all this to dissuade you, but all I'm saying is, online isn't really magic or anything like that. And it'll likely take a lot of time for you to know the person, both know them and meet them. But there is a chance of success, so if you do wanna try, go for it. Could end up well for you, just keep those issues in mind.

yes, it can work. i met my boyfriend here. we first vaguely saw each other around in late 2010, then started talking in earnest in late spring of 2011. in 2 weeks i am moving in with him, thousands of miles away.

we actually chose each other over people who were interested in us in real life. but it helped that we had a goal of being together eventually, as opposed to expecting it to stay online indefinitely. we did meet in person for a week. the online chemistry carried over to real life, which was also awesome. i'd had some experience with online dating before so i kind of knew whether it was going to translate or not.

something else that helped was that in the early days we had a lot of time available to talk, so we could really interact for long stretches and get to know each other quite well.

Avoid a long distance relationship, get outside and do some real socializing.

There's nothing not "real" about knowing someone online, and having a long distance relationship doesn't mean you can't also socialize in person. Choosing to be with someone far away isn't necessarily about being incapable of "getting" someone closer, sometimes it's simply because you actually do like them and care about them more than local people.

For those who need what a strictly local relationship has to offer, there's nothing wrong with that. But for some people long distance can work, because they don't want to limit their feelings based on geography and probability.

This is the 21st century people, the prejudice of "real life" only being a small traditionally-sanctioned subset of the ways people live and interact really needs to be reevaluated.

I would suggest not looking specifically for aspie girls. They are fewer in number than men with Asperger's, so allowing the possibility for your potential gf to be NT would provide a better chance of finding one. Just make sure that let them know that have AS.

I don't do long distance and I think it's pointless.

It's basically like being single but with rules. You still aren't going to have a date to avoid 3rd wheeling or being alone, but if you happen to meet someone, you can't do anything.

I think it's pointless. Just remain single and try to meet someone closer to you that you can actually date.

The only time I would do LD would be if my wife/long term GF got a great job in a diff city and we had to go LD until I could get a job in the same place.

Why limit yourself to people with AS?

I'm curious why you think it's pointless to care about someone who happens not to live close by, who also feels the same way, and to enjoy that emotional bond? How is that the same as being single? Is it just because of the lack of physical contact? Or missing out on the usual idea of "dates"? What would you do if you had stronger feelings for someone distant than for the people you know in person? Would you ignore that for the sake of having a more conventional relationship with someone you liked less?

^^ Genuine questions, not being snarky, just trying to understand because I really don't.

I won't argue with the fact that there are difficulties and frustrations involved, but I think "pointless" is a very strong term. Sometimes things that require hard work, are worth the effort. Smile

The positive to a LDR is that the focus really is on getting to know the other person. There are not the "distractions" of seeing the person and, say, making out with them for 2 hours. While those are lovely distractions, it can focus a relationship on just the physical instead of the emotional. With a LDR, the physical will never get in the way.

With that said, there are a lot of negatives. Trust is a big issue. The other person could be totally playing you and having someone else in his/her bed every night and you would never know it. Also, simple things like going to a movie or going out to dinner can simply never happen. So, frustration will set in.

The keys to success are:
1. There has to be an end date (even if it is a year into the future) to the LDR when one of you will relocate to be near the other. In that way, even though the LDR will be frustrating, there will be a "light at the end of the tunnel".
2. Trust - you both have to trust that this is "real" for both of you and neither is taking advantage of the long distance to play the other person.
3. Communication - There has to be open and honest communication. LDR are not for everyone and when one is feeling frustrated, that has to be communicated and dealt with.

LDR can definitely work as long as you go in with your eyes wide open! Good luck!

They've pretty much made up most of my relationships, if you can even call them that, and only one of them lasted a significant amount of time - maybe 2 to 2 and a half years or so. Even then, though it started off well enough, eventually I guess we both just got disinterested in each other and stopped talking, and later she'd admitted she only gave me attention because she pitied me. I'm not sure if I could really blame her for that, though. Was more than a few years back, so we were young, I was pretty immature and self absorbed and desperate for anyone to rely on. She told me everything I wanted to hear, so at least I had that.

But yeah, living across the entire US and both of us maybe having been around 14-15 at the time are probably also factors as to why it didn't work. I imagine it's very different for people who are older, know what they want, have jobs and are independent, etc. I'm older now, but still without a job and still dependent on my parents, so I've pretty much got absolutely nothing going on in my life to talk about and I can't travel too far to eventually meet anyone. I guess a lot of these problems would overlap with any kind of "normal" dating, too, so it's sort of moot, but still something to consider.
